A generic top-level domain (gTLD) is a type of domain extension that uses generic or general terms as part of the domain. These domain extensions are not restricted to specific countries or regions. They are administered by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and can be registered by individuals, organizations or companies worldwide. Operating a gTLD registry requires daily backups of the registration data for the domains it manages and storing them with a trusted escrow agent.
